DiTomasso Named President of Medical Data Institute

TREVOSE, PA—(June 21, 2001)—Today Medical Data Institute (MDI), the leading provider of medical supply content, announced the promotion of Karen DiTomasso to President. DiTomasso (formerly Vice President) will assume an even greater strategic leadership role to foster the company’s accelerated growth. Matthew Cohn, former President of MDI, will continue to shape the direction of the company in his new post as CEO.

“Karen has tremendous vision for Medical Data Institute. Her ideas, direction and tireless efforts enabled the company to double in size last year, in both staff and revenue,” said Cohn. DiTomasso launched a new division of the company, Centralmed.com, which significantly contributed to the growth of Medical Data Institute. “Managing the tremendous growth MDI experienced in the last year takes amazing strength, dedication and vision. Karen more than stepped up to the challenge; she shined. I am confident in her ability to advance the company even further,” said Cohn.

The promotion to President came as a surprise to DiTomasso. At a company-wide meeting, Cohn spoke about the success of the company and emphasized the importance of leadership, and DiTomasso’s role in particular. He then announced Karen DiTomasso’s promotion to President and presented her with a commemorative plaque. The room roared with applause and excitement for DiTomasso.

“I was absolutely shocked! For the first time, I was speechless. I had no idea this was coming. The first thought that came to mind was to thank my outstanding management team, and the entire MDI staff. I certainly couldn’t take all of the credit for MDI’s success. A company couldn’t grow as much as we have without teamwork… and everyone working towards the same goals,” said DiTomasso. “I’m proud of the entire team and all we’ve achieved together. I also look forward to the future and growing the company even more.”

When asked about the direction of the company for the future, DiTomasso explained that MDI will continue providing product research services to home health care supply providers (and med/surg equipment providers) via EPIC Plus, MDI’s flagship product. “Our goals are also to expand the e-commerce arm of the business, our Centralmed.com division. We’re working with major manufacturers and online marketplaces to provide medical product content. Our clients choose from 1,000,000 products and 2,500 vendor catalogs to populate the purchasing areas of their sites. It saves them millions of dollars in creating and maintaining the product descriptions, pricing and other pertinent information themselves,” said DiTomasso.

MDI is also working with many of the medical supply standards associations and committees to establish standard product categories, naming conventions and more. “Organizations like HEDIC, UNSPSC, HIBCC and CHeStandards have consulted with us about how we have standardized product information since 1988. We are now on the boards of these groups and meet regularly on standardization issues. We look forward to an increased role in establishing standards for the future of this industry,” added DiTomasso.

Prior to joining MDI, DiTomasso spent 12 years in medical technology, including managing a clinical oncology laboratory and selling chemistry analyzers to hospitals. She also holds a degree in Medical Technology from Hahnemann University.

In 1988, she joined Medical Data Institute as a Sales Representative. Growing along with the company, DiTomasso has been promoted numerous times during her tenure at MDI, including from Sales Representative to Vice President and now President. Cohn commented, “In the process, Karen built a strong management team to whom she credits much of the company’s recent success. She always acknowledges the talents and support of other people, so it’s no surprise that she is so respected by the MDI team. They clearly look up to her for her industry knowledge, leadership and enthusiasm for this business.”

“Her experience, skills and the respect she commands from her colleagues all make Karen ideally suited for the position of President of MDI,” added Cohn.
